Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail 2024

Sunday March 10 – Friday March 15, 2024

Kangaroo Island is well on its way to recovering after bushfires in early 2020 damaged much of the island, and we are heading there in March 2024 to take on the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – Fire Recovery Experience.

Almost three years after the bushfires we’ll see how the land is recovering, with lots of new growth and habitat for the flora and fauna.

While the summer 2019–20 bushfires were devastating, the bush bounces back quickly. Green shoots are springing from tree trunks and tiny seedlings are emerging from the soil. Yaccas are putting on an amazing show, with flower spikes reaching heights of 6 metres! It is easy to spot wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, birds and echidnas. Without the dense vegetation, visitors can witness a rarely seen landscape – discover the undulating landforms and experience 360 degree views. This really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Over five days we’ll explore the best of the sights in Flinders Chase National Park, and return to our comfortable accommodation in luxury cabins each afternoon to relax and recover for the next day.

Arriving on Sunday March 19 you’ll make your way from the ferry terminal at Penneshaw to our accommodation near Flinders Chase National Park. The best way to get there is to have your own vehicle, which also allows you the option of exploring more of the island each afternoon after we have completed the day’s walk.

All meals are provided for the week, trail drop offs and pick ups and park entry fees are included in your package.

We will be walking Monday through to Friday, and we will check out on Friday morning, however if the group is feeling fit and strong we may complete the final two 10km days on Thursday, allowing a relaxing Friday morning departure.

Ferry fares and transport to and from Cape Jervis are not included in the package, but we can help you with the booking links and which ferry times are best.

Cape Jervis is around 2.5 hours south of Adelaide, and there are lots of coach/shuttle options to get there from Adelaide.

We are limited to 9 participants on our Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail Experience, so if you want to join us you’ll need to click the link below to register your interest so we can book you in.

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail traverses the most botanically unique area in all of South Australia. As the bush recovers from the fires, majestic sugar gums and towering mallee are lush with growth while tiny flowers cover windswept heath, offering a kaleidoscope of forms and that will surprise and delight you. Some plants take longer to recover than others and in places blackened branches dominate the landscape. But look closely and you are sure to spot green shoots emerging from the soil.

**Please note that the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is a Grade 4 Walk which requires a good level of fitness and may involve steep uphill and walking across rocky sections. We encourage you to discuss your fitness levels and current training with us to ensure you’ll be ready to enjoy the experience.
